Using drugs alone is not usually the best treatment for ADHD. Sometimes, the child's emotions - such as anxiety, panic or hyper-reactivity - contribute to their behavior. Pediatricians must cope with the emotional issues first so that the child can become more stable. Then, if the child continues to have symptoms of ADHD, medication can help.

ADHD medication and neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters are chemical substances the brain. It seems that some abnormal genes may prevent children with ADHD from the process of metabolism (chemical processing) is an important neurotransmitter in the normal way. But scientists have discovered the defects of certain brain that can explain the ADHD. This also means there may not be a single drug that can correct the problem.

Stimulant medications for ADHD

Stimulant medications have been used for more than 50 years. Stimulants such as dexamphetamine and methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) act on the neurotransmitters that release the chemical dopamine. Greater amounts of dopamine help to curb hyperactive behavior and impulsiveness typical of ADHD children.

Dexamphetamine and methylphenidate are the two main drugs used to treat ADHD. They differ in chemical makeup and effects, so a particular child can benefit more from one drug than another. Some children benefit most from taking a combination of both.

There is a form of short-acting stimulant, which lasts about three to four hours (including Ritalin 10, Attenta and dexamphetamine), and long-acting forms (including Ritalin LA that lasts six to eight hours and the Concert that took place ten to twelve hours). A child will feel a calming effect from these medications in about half an hour of taking them. Medicine non-stimulant (such as Strattera) can also be used.
